In the Vogue article about the Dolce and Gabana Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear collection, Sarah Mower says “Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have found their true calling in fashion: making people feel good about themselves.” Her statement couldn’t be more true, their collection is full of bright colors, patterns, and pieces fitted for all shapes and sizes. At this show Dolce declared “Each one of us is the king or queen of our own lives!” Their enthusiasm for clothing and making people happy is the most inspiring aspect of the collection for Spring 2019. The article said that “The theme of this season’s show was DNA—the designers’ own fingerprints were projected on screens behind the audience. There were more than 150 looks (perhaps this is turning into an Italian inter-brand contest, after Riccardo Tisci’s Burberry score of 134 and Emporio Armani showing more than 170).” The theme fits the show so well because each piece was so unique and different, like all of us.
The dress I found enticing was look 97th on the runway show. With all of the bright colors, texture, ruffles, and polka dots, it was hard to miss. The model, Chiara Frizzera, wore a flower crown that matched the red and pink colors in the dress and a bulky gold statement necklace and earrings with bright blue gems that pulled the whole look together. The dress somewhat resembles historic fiesta attire with the tiered ruffles and texture, but also has modern flare with the polka dots. The colors all work together so brilliantly, with the fuchsia and yellow, navy and sky blue, purple and sky blue, etcetera.
I see this piece being related to everyday wear because I often see and wear bright colors during every season. Most people associate these colors with spring and summer times, however I find more and more recently people are trying to incorporate bright colors in their fall and winter wardrobes. Also, polka dots were formerly a trend in past years, but they went a way for a while, but I am happy to see that they are making a huge comeback. You find polka dots in almost every store now, and on the runway! I think that the runway had an influential role on bringing polka dots back to our wardrobes. Also, the runway defiantly played a major role in bringing ruffles and tiered dresses and skirts back to our everyday lives.
High fashion has played a big role in taking something normally viewed as “tacky,” such as polka dots or ruffles, and turning it into a statement pattern/texture and creating eloquent pieces that have had an enormous impact on everyday street wear. I defiantly can see polka dots going back out of style for several years, and make a huge comeback all over again with the fashion cycle. However, I hope bright colors remain prominent for a while as with ruffles and tiered clothing.
